Wearing dentures is an effective way to restore your smile, boost your confidence and improve the quality of your life. However, new wearers may take some time to get used to dentures. This is because there is an adjustment period where you have to get used to the feeling of having them in your mouth. But there is no need for you to sacrifice comfort for your smile.

Denturists at Accurate Denture Clinic are more than happy to answer any concerns or questions you have regarding wearing dentures. We are in the practice of creating high-quality dentures since 2006. Whether you are missing all your teeth or a single tooth, we can fabricate the perfect denture for you.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind to make your transition to dentures easier.

The First 24 Hours

Dentures can be worn immediately after teeth extraction. If we have to extract teeth, our dentists might prescribe you antibiotics and pain relievers to take while the site heals. It’s crucial that the dentures aren’t removed during the first 24 hours to help the gums heal.

After 24 hours, we recommend you remove your dentures before going to sleep. This is important for your gums to rest and stay healthy. It’s crucial to take breaks as your gums aren’t designed to be covered by dentures all the time.

We recommend that you eat soft food. Chew using both sides of your mouth. This is because the extraction sites will be sore and will take time to heal.

You will have to return to our office after the first 24 hours, so your denturist can make the necessary adjustments to your dentures.

In the First Two Weeks

It’s normal for sore spots to develop during the initial few days of wearing dentures. You will also have more saliva in your mouth.

Usually rinsing your mouth with warm solution of salt water could help gum tissue heal faster.

Since gum tissue contracts as it heals, you may have to see your denturist several times till your dentures fit comfortably.

In the First 30 Days

It takes time for your cheeks, gums and tongue to adjust to an oral appliance. After the first few weeks, you will notice less saliva and fewer sore spots in your mouth. Don’t hesitate to contact us if your dentures need adjustments.

It will take some time for you to get used to talking with dentures and eating. If you are lisping while talking, try reading aloud to practice your speech.
