THE IMPORTANCE OF TIMELY DENTURE REPAIRS: AVOIDING FURTHER DAMAGE

Your dentures may not be your original teeth, it is important to care for them with the care and attention of a tooth fairy. In addition to brushing and cleaning them regularly, you have the advantage of being able to easily examine your dentures for any sign of wear, cracking, or breaking.

How to Check for Damaged Dentures

To avoid expensive denture repairs, it is best to perform inspections of your dentures as part of your daily cleaning routine. You should:

  • examine the teeth and base and look for chips, cracks, and other signs of breakage.

  • Check the fit and comfort of your dentures: Do you have any discomfort or pain while wearing them? Are you having difficulty chewing? Do you dentures slip of feel loose?

  • Check yourself out in the mirror. Do you see any changes in your facial appearance? Are there new wrinkles? Do your cheeks or jawline look sunken?

  • reflect on how your mouth feels when you talk. Has your speech changed? Is there a feeling of uneven pressure in your mouth?

  • be aware of persistent bad breath even after proper cleaning and look for stains or lingering odors that don't go away with regular cleaning

If you notice any of these signs of denture damage, contact your denturist as soon as possible. They will direct you on what to do. Note, this will never be a do-it-yourself solution. Any attempts at home denture repair can easily result in further damage to your dentures and/or to your mouth.

What Happens If. . .

You don’t tend to small cracks or chips in your denture base or teeth?

The cracks and chips can quickly worsen and create a more extensive and expensive denture repair.

Your dentures don’t seem to fit right?

Damaged, ill-fitting dentures cause discomfort, difficulty eating, and possibly even oral health issues. Quick denture repairs keep your dentures functioning properly so you can eat and speak easily and pain-free.

Your damaged or ill-fitting dentures cause irritation, sores, or even an infection in the mouth?

Your oral health can be greatly compromised by delaying denture repair. Gum inflammation and mouth sores make it very uncomfortable to wear your dentures. Fungal and bacterial infections can develop from wearing damaged or improperly cleaned dentures as can dry mouth and bad breath. Finally, if you persist in wearing damaged dentures you may accelerate bone loss in your jaw, which affects the shape of your face.
