Do you need dentures but aren’t sure which type might suit you best? In this blog, Accurate Denture Clinic Ltd. compares the pros and cons of implant dentures versus traditional dentures to help you find the right option for you.

Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures are removable, custom-made dental prosthetics that are designed to replace a patient's missing teeth and gum tissues. They are typically made of acrylic resin. Depending on the patient’s needs, their dentist may recommend either partial or full dentures. While partial dentures are designed to replace only a few missing teeth, full dentures are the best option in situations where all of the teeth in an arch are missing.

Pros

  • More affordable – Traditional dentures carry lower upfront costs than implant ones.

  • Non-invasive – Patients do not need to undergo surgery to be fitted with traditional dentures.

  • Faster turnaround – The fabrication and fitting of the patient’s custom dentures take between 2 to 4 weeks.

Cons

  • Risks of slippage – Since traditional dentures are fitted directly onto the patient’s gums, they are often prone to slipping. This can occur especially when the patient is eating or speaking.

  • Discomfort – Since these dentures are less stable and are prone to slipping, they can cause discomfort, as well as sore spots in the mouth.

  • Chewing difficulties – Patients who are fitted with traditional dentures may have difficulty chewing certain foods. This can therefore also lead to certain dietary restrictions.

  • Changes in speech – Patients may experience speech difficulties, such as slurring or lisping, especially when adjusting to new dentures.

  • Deterioration of the jawbone – Over time, the patient may experience bone loss in the jaw, causing their dentures to loosen. As a result, patients with traditional dentures often require follow-up replacement and relining procedures.

Implant Dentures

These dentures are supported by implants that are surgically placed in the patient’s jawbone. These dental implants can support both full and partial dentures.

Pros

  • Better stability – Thanks to the use of dental implants, these dentures offer better stability and less slippage.

  • Enhanced chewing ability – Chewing is much more comfortable with implant dentures, allowing patients to enjoy a greater variety of food and a more balanced diet.

  • Greater comfort – Since the risk of slippage is vastly reduced with implant dentures, patients also benefit from increased comfort. Implant dentures also eliminate the sore spots that often occur with traditional dentures.

  • Fewer speech problems – Likewise, the enhanced stability of implant dentures minimizes the risk of developing speech problems during the adjustment period.

  • Prevention of bone loss – Since the dental implants help stimulate the jawbone, patients experience less bone loss.

Cons

  • Surgery – Since this method involves a surgical procedure, it might not be suitable for all patients.

  • Higher costs – These dentures are more expensive than traditional ones because of the additional costs associated with the implants and surgery.

  • Longer process – Due to the duration of the treatment and a longer healing time, the process can take several months.
